Vintage Taylor Smith Taylor Petal Lane Vegetable Serving Bowl circa 1959
{HISTORY}
Welcome to the wonderfully wispy and whimsical world of 1950s dinnerware. Perfectly named for the spring and summer seasons, this vintage vegetable serving bowl features the Petal Lane pattern made by Taylor Smith Taylor in 1959.
Back in the 1950s and early 1960s, it was possible to acquire an entire Homermaker set (136 pieces in total) in the Petal Lane pattern for $49, which is equal to about $550 today. That one expense would provide settings for eight people, including dishware, flatware, and glassware, all in the matching Petal Lane pattern.
Packaged for ease and an instant collection in mind, homemaker sets were designed for young marrieds, second-home owners, and anyone desiring an ancillary set of dishware for everyday use. Casual, carefree, and containing popular colors of the era, these homemaker sets contained all the typical dish pieces necessary to set a full and complete table, including cups, plates, bowls, one platter, two large serving bowls, and a creamer and sugar bowl, plus matching glassware and flatware for a completely cohesive look. The only additional things needed to complete the whole table setting were food and friends.
This large Petal Lane serving bowl would have been a part of that original Homemaker package - a handy helper for serving everything from mashed potatoes to vegetables, popcorn to pasta. Made in the Versatile shape, which launched at Taylor Smith Taylor in the 1950s also, this shape featured rimless edges for a more modern look. Versatile was a shape that was unlike anything Taylor Smih Taylor had produced before, and represents the pottery's ability to evolve with the times.
With its offset floral design and a platinum rim, this 9" inch diameter bowl features the retro color palette of sky blue, cucumber, salmon pink, and slate grey... all those iconic shades that made the 1950s and 1960s cheerful and bright.
