Antique Semi-Porcelain Soup Tureen with Dark Red and Grey Florals and Gold Detailing

Antique Semi-Porcelain Soup Tureen with Dark Red and Grey Florals and Gold Detailing

Broad, wholesome charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime. Mark Twain

{HISTORY}

If you like to fancy yourself an international jet-setter, you'd be in good company with this antique soup tureen.Ā Unmarked as to maker or manufacturer (other than a set of handwritten numbers on the bottom in gold) we suspect that it either came from a porcelain factory in Europe (possibly Austria or Czechoslovakia) or that it came from Asia as part of a reproduction movement. Either way, it was a traveler nonetheless. Eventually making its way halfway around the world, it has come to rest for a time in the southern United States.Ā Ā

Most likely made around the late 1800s-early 1900s, it has seen some adventures in its long life. There is a small chip on one of the handles and a 3.5" inch hairline crack (most noticeable on the inside of the base) but like any scar worth its story, this beauty is made even more interesting by its flaws rather than its perfections.

The floral transferware which is a deep wine-colored red and pale grey features two different types of flowers onĀ both the base and the removable lid. Gold detailing highlights stylish embossing marksĀ and a cutout in the lid features a resting spot for a soup ladle.Ā  Sturdy yet delicate, it is sty; ish centerpiece whether you choose to display it in your kitchen, or incorporate it into your serving collection.

Around here, we like to use antique tureens, not as soup holders but as bread warming baskets, table centerpieces and kitchen garden containers. They also serve as gorgeous art pieces all on their own as well.
