Vintage San Francisco Coasters with Painted Scenes by Betty Guy circa 1994 - Set of 6 in Original Box

Vintage San Francisco Coasters with Painted Scenes by Betty Guy circa 1994 - Set of 6 in Original Box

{HISTORY}

The beauty of San Francisco knows no bounds. Whether it is covered in a marine layer of misty fog or bathed in sunlight on a gorgeous summer day, it is no wonder that the city has been enchanting artists for centuries with its picturesque vistas.Ā

In 1993, San Fran artist and native, Betty Guy (1920-2016) was commissioned by Gump's Department Store to paint six scenes featuring the city's most iconic spots. In soft shades of watercolor and ink, Betty captured the Golden Gate Bridge, Coit Tower, a cable car, the Japanese Tea Garden, the Palace of Fine Arts, and the exterior of Gump's for a set of souvenir coasters.Ā

Betty, a prominent American artist who trained in New York and Paris, worked all over the world, creating landscape portraits and sketches of various cities as well as design commissions for local organizations and publishing houses. One of her most famous commissions was a portrait of John Steinbeck's cottage in England, which resulted in a lifelong friendship with him and his family.Ā

Known for her moody, atmospheric, and spidery watercolor washes, Betty exhibited internationally throughout the latter half of the 20th century, and her work is held in collections around the globe. But of all the countries and cities she captured, Ā one of her most favorite subjects was always her hometown of San Francisco.Ā

Manufactured by Pimpernel in England, this set of six coasters, accompanied by its original box and artist card, looks like it just stepped off the store shelf. That makes each coaster both a mini work of art and a functional decor piece that adds instant color and creativity to the bar cart and dining table. Whichever place these coasters fit best in your space, Betty will be sure to add a bit of beauty to the day and the occasion.Ā
