Antique John Maddock & Sons Wash Basin Bowl with Goldenrod Flowers circa 1870-1897

{HISTORY}

Containing all the golden, sun-kissed colors of autumn,  this antique wash basin bowl was made in the bustling pottery area of Burelsm, Stoke-on-Trent, England by John Maddock and Sons between the years 1870-1897. A family-run business that first began in the 1830s, John Maddock manufactured dishware for over 150 years before closing permanently in the 1980s. 

This basin bowl was made around the time that pottery founder John Maddock, retired and his son, John Jr. took over complete operation of the company.  Interested in producing functional dishware instead of merely decorative, the company flourished under John Jr.'s guidance.

Traveling to America, in the mid-1870s, John Jr. got a better understanding of the needs, and desires of consumers as well as the potential business opportunities for the American dishware market - info that he took back home to England where he enlarged his pottery operations, expanding into hotelware and retail export.

Whether this basin bowl was in service in a hotel or a private home is unknown, but whatever its location it has been wonderfully cared for over the past 150 years. Large and decorative, with pintuck style embossing, large scalloped handles, a shimmery gold speckled rim, and swags of delicate goldenrod flowers, it is in absolutely gorgeous shape with no chips, cracks, staining or crazing. Heavy and very substantial, it weighs in at just over 6 lbs, making it ideal for all sorts of household purposes. 

 Here in the Vintage Kitchen, on the decorating front, we love to fill old wash basin bowls with seasonal fruits, vegetables, plants and flowers for unique table centerpieces. We also love them for cleaning and soaking all the delicate linens that you don't want to run through a traditional washing machine. Their large deep size accommodates quite a number of linens at once and the slippery smooth interior glaze keeps delicate fabrics from snagging and tearing. As far as soaking tubs go, you can't find anything prettier than an antique floral basin bowl.

{CONDITION}

In lovely antique condition. There are no chips, cracks or staining. The gold edge is very shimmery and shiny. The floral bouquets are crisp and clear. In the photos, it looks like the bottom interior of the bowl has a pink cast to it - that's just a reflection. The bowl is very white and bright all over and the glaze is very shiny and smooth.
