Vintage Johnson Bros Marquis Windsor Ware Berry Bowls - Set of Two circa 1940s-1960s
{HISTORY}
Made in England from the 1940s-1960s, this pair of Johnson Brothers floral berry bowls features the colorful hand-painted Marquis pattern. Part of their Windsor Ware series, they feature a gadroon style edge, and two big swags of cottage flowers in shades of pink, green, yellow, plum, blueberry and chocolate.
The back of the bowls are equally interesting. In addition to the maker's mark, pattern name and series name, these bowls also contain the initials F.B. & Co - the mark of the Philadelphia, PA importer for whom these bowls were made. Formally known as Fisher, Bruce & Co, this family-run Pennsylvania importer was located in the heart of downtown Philadelphia on Market Street. Operating from the 1880s-1970s, F.B. & Co imported dishware from England, Italy, and France and shipped it around the U.S. to various retail clients.
A lovely example of just how far vintage dishes traveled on the retail end before they reached the consumer, it is pretty amazing to think about how many times these dishes were handled before they ended up in the gentle care of the buyer. And then, what were their adventures from there? Arriving here in New England from Washington state, we know that they experienced at least a few cross-country trips in their eighty years of life. From the makers to the painters to the packers and the unpackers, and from one collector to another time and again, both of these bowls carry stories of skill, style, and wanderlust spirit as they traveled from there to here and here to there across eight decades. We can't wait to find out where they will be heading next!
