Vintage Green Striped Restaurant Ware Luncheon Plates by Sterling China circa 1930s-1940s- Set of Two
{HISTORY}
Manufactured by Sterling China, one of the hospitality industry's leading dishware makers, this pair of green-striped 9-inch luncheon plates was made in East Liverpool, Ohio, sometime around the 1930s-1940s. Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā
Classic in all the best ways, green-striped restaurant ware is one of the most popular of all restaurant dishware patterns. Dozens of potteries working within the domestic and hospitality markets had their own version of this simple green stripe throughout many decades of the 20th century. Designed in varying widths and numbers of concentric bands depending on maker, Sterling's version contained three stripes and a very narrow shoulder, giving it an elegant, streamlined style suitable for a wide variety of restaurants, from diners to race tracks, sporting clubs to luncheonettes, clubhouses to cafeterias. Everyone loved a stripe!Ā
Especially known for their glazing techniques and lasting design durability, Sterling China was founded in 1917 and quickly became a leading manufacturer of dishware for the hospitality market. Operating throughout the 20th century, the pottery was unfotunately unable to compete with foreign markets and closed permanently in 2006, just a decade shy of its 100th birthday.Ā
Hard to find nowadays in this narrow shoulder and closely placed stripe style, these Sterling luncheon plates make a fun addition to mismatched green stripe collections in all their unique variations.Ā
