Vintage 1960s Ambrosia China Fruit & Floral Bread Plates - Set of Two
{HISTORY}
Ambrosia. It's a fruit salad dessert. It's a plant (also commonly known as ragweed). It's a Greek myth, an ancient Chinese legend, and a 20th century pottery company. When it comes to dishes there are many ambrosia patterns, but only one Ambrosia China maker. That's where these two bread plates come in.
Featuring a colorful basket overflowing with fruit and flowers, this pattern made by the Ambrosa China dates to the 1960s. It features a gadroon edge, also known as rope-style, a gold rim, and a center transferware pattern of a basket stuffed with grapes, pears, pomegranates, plums, figs and roses.Ā
The popular Greek myth of ambrosia calls it the food of the gods. A fruit that offered Olympians immortality and eternal youth.Ā The lesser known Chinese legend also involves a fruit and a fountain of youth theme but details story of an emperor, an epic journey, and a great white stork. Since the Chinese version is lesser known and rich in detail, for added fun, we'll include a 1917 retelling of the Chinese version of the Ambrosia legend with the purchase of these dishes.
Stortellying aside, it is easy to see why these dishes have traveled the decades so beautifully. Ideal for serving fruit, bread, desserts, cheese and crackers, and other assorted snacks, these two look practically brand new, so perhaps there is something to be said about the magical power of Ambrosia and its eternal timeliness.
