Vintage 1950s Green & White Restaurant Ware Luncheon Plates by Sterling China circa 1958 - Set of Two
{HISTORY}
Made in the spring of 1958 by Sterling China in Wellsville, Ohio, and distributed byĀ J.L. Pasmantier & Sons in New York, these two green and white floral restaurantware luncheon plates contain a beautiful pattern of celadon leaves and flowers.Ā
Fun to think that these two were destined for a botanical garden cafe, monthly meetings at the horticulture club, or a flower-themed restaurant; the blooms on these plates look similar to Canterbury bells with their wavy edge and three stylized dots floating above. While it is uncertain where these two were specifically headed, there were other restaurant ware manufacturers that included this pattern in their design libraries, making it most likely a stock pattern suitable to the taste and whimsy of all types of restauranteurs.Ā
J.L. Pasmantier & Sons had a long, ongoing relationship with Sterling China and distributed many of their hospitality dishes throughout the US. Based in New York City, J.L. Pasmantier & Sons was founded in the late 1890s by Romanian immigrant John L. Pasmantier (1873-1955) and operated through the 1980s, with generations of family members guiding the company across almost a century of operation. Never far removed from the hospitality industry, the Pasmantier family traveled extensively, was active in many NYC philanthropic endeavors, and John L. lived at the Park Royal Hotel on the Upper West Side. It's fun to imagine that in all of their travels and adventures about town and otherwise, the Pasmantiers might have encountered these two plates again in a meeting room or a dining spot while enjoying a lovely meal.Ā
Now, a very hard-to-find pattern, these days they lend a dynamic botanical vibe to any tablescape and pair so well with other mix-and-match restaurantware pieces that contain similar shades of green.Ā
