Vintage 1940s Green Stripe Restaurant Ware Berry Bowls by Buffalo China circa 1949 - Set of Four

Vintage 1940s Green Stripe Restaurant Ware Berry Bowls by Buffalo China circa 1949 - Set of Four

{HISTORY}

Classic, classic, classic.

If there's one word we could choose to describe vintage green striped restaurant ware it's that one. Classic.

Made by Buffalo China in Buffalo, NY in 1949, this set of four green and white berry bowls features the iconic stripes found on tables in all sorts of midcentury dining establishments from doughnut shops to diners, cafeterias to roadside cafes, lunheonettes to lounges and all the interesting eating spots in between.

Berry bowl-size, also known as fruit bowls and dessert bowls, these four served up a variety of foods, including side dishes, salads, and desserts. Mashed potatoes, ice cream, baked beans, blueberry buckle, stewed prunes, rice pudding, coleslaw, creamed corn... those are just a few types of food that would have come to the table in these capable little workers. Today, they continue that same longstanding tradition of being very helpful in the kitchen. Whether you are prepping a meal, serving snacks, or setting a table full of mix-and-match variety, these four are up to all the tasks. For pet owners, they also make great cat food bowls since they are heavy-duty and can withstand a little batting around. Ā

Lots of potteries made green and white striped dishes during the 20th century, which makes it an especially fun pattern for mixing and matching. These Buffalo berry bowls feature an inner green stripe along with an additional green stripe around the rim. This is a harder style to find these days and adds extra flair for striped restaurant ware collections curated today.Ā

Buffalo China (originally known as Buffalo Pottery) was started in 1901, and from the get-go, the pottery was making impressive strides. It was the largest fireproof pottery in the world at the time it was built and it was the first pottery in the world to operate completely by electricity. Those two bits of "edge" on the industry allowed Buffalo to power its way through the century, turning out millions of pieces of pottery for the wholesale, retail, and restaurant industries.Ā

Family-run throughout the 20th century, Buffalo China navigated the highs and lows of the American economy and continued to produce high-quality dishware in incredible quantities up until it was sold to a local ceramics company in 2004 and ceased operation shortly thereafter.
