Large Antique T.J. & J Mayer Florentine Platter 18x14 circa 1843-1855
{HISTORY}
A beauty in design and aesthetic, full of intricate details, and centuries of history, this large, heavy antique platter is not only one of the oldest serving pieces that has come to the shop but also one of the largest. Weighing in at over 6 1/2 lbs., it was made by TJ & J Mayer in England and features the Florentine pattern.
In business for just twelve years, brothers Thomas, John, and Joseph Mayer founded their pottery in 1843 in Burslem, England, under the name T.J. & J. Mayer. Winners of an Exposition award in 1851, the Mayer brothers were known for their romantic dish themes, which were especially popular in the American market around the mid-19th century.
The pottery closed down upon the death of Thomas in 1855, but luckily, the Mayer brothers' dishes still surface now and again to remind us of their artistry. Hard-to-find in its large size, Ā the Florentine pattern with its lush depiction of a castle, bridge, boats, and people, is as much an art piece as it is a functional serving platter. There is so much detail in this landscape that it's easy to understand the talent of the Mayer pottery artisans. The shoulder features cascading flowers, repeating portraits of a castle, and a delicate series of stripes.Ā
On the backside, the maker's mark is equally beautiful with a wreath of flowers, a dog, and the pattern name proudly declaring it a work of art by T.J. & J Mayer.Ā
Stunning when paired with other blue and white transferware pieces and antique ironstone, both on the table and also included in your wall decor, this platter lends instant history and depth to your designs. Full of charm and stained to perfection, it's a marvel to think that this platter has survived almost 200 years in such great shape.Ā
