Antique Noritake Porcelain Floral Celery Dish with Green Greek Key Emblems circa 1910s

Antique Noritake Porcelain Floral Celery Dish with Green Greek Key Emblems circa 1910s

{HISTORY}

Long in shape and colorful in character, an antique celery dish was made for a pretty specific serving need in the early 1900s, but nowadays it moonlights as wonderful dish for serving all sorts of foods. From condiments like pickles and olives to nuts, dried fruit, citrus slices, onions rings, crackers, charcuterie, garnishes... the list goes on and on.

This porcelain celery dish, made in Japan by Noritake in the early 1900s, features a pretty floral design mixed with dynamic Greek key emblems and scalloped edges on each end. An unknown pattern name, it pairs well with lots of other Noritake patterns thanks to its hand-painted color palette and recurring floral arrangements.  That dynamic arrangement makes it especially fun for mismatched collections - an engaging style of tablescape perfect for creative types who like to create unique dining arrangements for each and every meal. This pattern pairs especially well with the Noritake Thelma Bassett pattern, so much so that we included that pattern in these celery dish photos. It also looks pretty with these Noritake dessert plates thanks to similar colors and floral bouquets.

It's always very fun to trace the history of vintage and antique Noritake because their backstamps and pottery marks have changed so much over the course of two centuries as the company evolved into a worldwide brand. This dish features the Nippon Rising Sun mark with dates to 1911 and signifies that it was made by the Morimura Brothers who originally started their pottery in 1889. Back then it when it was simply known as Nippon - the name of the region where the dishes were made.

Since those early days, artisans for Nippon (and then Noritake) have always focused on fine craftsmanship, gorgeous color arrangements, and exquisite designs. That attention to detail and level of commitment led Noritake to become one of the most celebrated and sought-after dishware brands in the world, still to this day internationally recognized for quality and luxury.
