Antique East Palestine Pottery Co Dixie Platter with Plum Roses circa 1890s

Antique East Palestine Pottery Co Dixie Platter with Plum Roses circa 1890s

{HISTORY}

Plum perfect, with its bouquets of lavender roses and celadon sprays, this lovely antique platter has been the topic of centerpiece conversations for over 100 years. Made by the East Palestine Pottery Company (E.P.P.Co) in East Palestine, Ohio, it features the Dixie shape and a bright and airy color palette with a scalloped edge and embossed dots.Ā

Started in the late 1800s, the East Palestine Pottery Company operated independently for over two decades before it was purchased by fellow area potter W.S. George in the early 1900s. With its slim window of production, East Palestine Pottery Company pieces are harder to find, making them all the more exciting for antique dishware collectors.

The factory burned down under W.S. George's management in 1912, and although W.S. George was using bothĀ E.P.P.Co's production facility, dish patterns, and shapes upon acquisition, W.S. George marked all pieces with their own stamp beginning in 1904, so finding a piece with just an E.P.P.Co backstamp is both a treat and a treasure.

That detail aside, this E.P.P.Co platter is sweet and sentimental in the best of ways. A few condition issues tell of adventures had in previous centuries and previous decades, but the clear and colorful execution of these cottage roses is timeless in beauty and aesthetic.

Hints of gold around the handles, embossed dots and swirls around the edge, and blousy bouquets of roses shaded in pale pink, lavender, and plum around the shoulder signal the prettiest of Victorian tableware. Ā Minor staining, a few surface chips, and intricate crazing add a layered blanket of vulnerability caused by time. Ā

Nothing is better than a 130-year-old platter looking like it’s lived through 130 years of history. While this dish may not be ideal for serving tasks anymore, it's certainly up to creating a beautiful wall display.
