{HISTORY}

It's not often that you see deep purple shades in kitchen design. The Victorians favored more pale shades like lavender and lilac and the later decades of the 20th century featured more dusty shades like mauve and plum. But at some point around the mid 20th century, these bright eggplant-colored flowers emerged in a dish design and added a bit of elegant whimsy to the eating hour. 

They are unmarked as far as maker and date, so like some others in the shop, they retain an air of mystery as to who made them and where they came from. Their size though, reveals that they were used as bread and butter plates, an accommodating size for both snacks, salads and side dishes these days. And their pretty scalloped shape offers visual interest when combined with other dishes in other sizes.
