Vintage McCoy Floral Country Matchbox Holder Wall Pocket circa 1982

Vintage McCoy Floral Country Matchbox Holder Wall Pocket circa 1982

{HISTORY}

Made in the early 1980s, this vintage McCoy Pottery matchbox holder features the Floral Country pattern with its pretty forget-me-not flowers accented with a big white bloom (possibly a strawberry flower). Designed to hold matches for the kitchen stove, fireplace or other household necessities, this holder attaches to the wall for easy access and out-of-the-way storage.

Matches aren't always a household necessity these days, but there are lots of other creative ways you can repurpose a vintage matchbox holder. Here in the Vintage Kitchen, we like to use them as little catchalls for grocery lists or handwritten notes. But they also work well as change holders, candy dispensers, kitchen garbage bag dispensers, string caddies, a home for air plants, and utensil holders.

McCoy Pottery was great at making pieces that transitioned through the decades of the 20th century with purpose and possibility. The company's origin story dates all the way back to the 1840s, but became a more well-known brand at the turn of the 20th century. Evolving through the management of several McCoy generations, the company's name had several reiterations,  but the one thing that remained consistent was the McCoy name and their commitment to making quality houseware and kitchenware items.  Ranging from vases and planters to cookie jars, jugs, and even dishware, they became one of the most collected and beloved brands in America. Through a series of company sales in the later half of the 20th century, the McCoy brand was no longer in production after the early 1990s.

So full of cottage charm and cheerful imagery, this forty-year-old Floral Country time traveler adds all sorts of sunny personality to any kitchen. We especially love its artistic nod to 1940s design with its pretty color palette and scalloped embossing on front.
