Vintage Lillian Vernon Bulb Bowl with Hand-painted Blue & White Florals

Vintage Lillian Vernon Bulb Bowl with Hand-painted Blue & White Florals

{HISTORY}

Oh, for the love of Lillian!

There's a lot to marvel at when it comes to this vintage bulb bowl. From its hand-painted blue and white florals to its practical size and shape to its pretty signature on the bottom, it was made in Japan for Lillian Vernon, Ā one of the most beloved catalog companies of the late 20th century.Ā

With an eye for style, unique finds, and handmade design, the Liillian Vernon catalog was a fun, creative, and inspirational sourcebook for the late 1900s home dweller. Offering a range of products from homewares and gardening tools to clothing, collectibles, toys, and gourmet food gifts, Lillian Vernon offered an array of interesting products at affordable prices, all tailored towards the late 20th-century woman juggling career, family, and home life.Ā

Started as a fashion accessories company specializing in bags and belts in the early 1950s, Lillian Menarche Hochberg (1927-2015) was a young bride and new mom when she first started her company from the kitchen table of her Mount Vernon, NY home. Two decades later, that humble start led her to helm one of the most successful mail-order businesses of the century, and she became the first female founder of a company to be publicly traded on the stock market.Ā

Two of the things that made Lillian Vernon so successful were her attention to detail and her emphatic insistence for high quality craftsmanship. She did keep up with trends as well, but when it came to curating items for her catalog, she focused on unique pieces that served a purpose and made daily life more helpful, interesting, and engaging. This bulb dish is a prime example.

Comprised of two pieces - a removable ceramic lid and a separate base, this bulb dish features holes for five bulbs, plus an extra hole for adding water. Easy to clean and display, it looks beautiful with various types of forced flowers from paperwhites to daffodils, tulips to crocuses, and everything in between. Trailing blue florals, hand-painted in Japan, offer a pretty view from all angles. Its 7-inch diameter is a perfect size for mantel, deep sill, or tabletop display.Ā

A classic piece of gardening equipment, bulb vases can be used year-round as both a bulb garden and a big bloom display vase. This one looks especially pretty with mismatched blue and white dishware collections.Ā
