Vintage Mary Madonna Statue by Holland Mold - Handpainted circa 1950s

Vintage Mary Madonna Statue by Holland Mold - Handpainted circa 1950s

{HISTORY}

So pretty in form and sentiment, having a Mary Madonna watching over your cook space might just be the little good symbol you need when it comes to tackling all your culinary endeavors.

This Mary Madonna was made by Holland Molds, a famous mold maker for the hobby craft market that was first founded in 1946 by Austrian immigrant Frank Hollendonner. Holland molds are fun to collect since they were almost always handpainted by ceramic hobby enthusiasts, therefore making each one unique.

Dating to the 1950s, and elegantly painted, this Mary Madonna features a simple blue and white color palette highlighting Mary's alabaster complexion and her wine-colored lips. In the 1950s, it was very popular to incorporate ceramics into tabletop centerpieces surrounded by fresh flowers, plants, or candles.  This one may have been used in such fashion for holiday get-togethers like Christmas or Easter or perhaps she adorned the Sunday night dinner table when all the family got together for a big homecooked meal.

Nowadays, we love her best on a shelf or mantel mixed in with dishes. She's kind of an unexpected surprise on display in the kitchen which always makes for delightfully captivating interior design.

Holland made several different styles of Mary Madonna molds over the course of the company's history before it was sold in the late 1990s. This particular style is a harder-to-find version making her all the more special.

Please note, Mary has seen a big adventure in her day. There is a crack that runs along the lines in the folds at her right shoulder that carries down to the bottom edge of her gown. As you'll see from the photos, this crack is barely noticeable. We think this flaw actually makes her look more beautiful, hence her inclusion here in the shop.
