Vintage French Tapestry Pillow by Craye Featuring Medieval Alphabet Animals and Flowers
{HISTORY}
Full of warm color and interesting details, this vintage tapestry pillow was made in France by Craye, a company that has been weaving beautiful tapestries in the Flemish style since the 1860s. Made sometime around the 1960s before the company changed names to Metrax-Craye, this pillow features dogs, bunnies, birds, a menagerie of flowers and a medieval alphabet all set against a brick red background.
In medieval times, tapestries were great storytellers. Like details in a novel, each scene represented certain themes and each animal represented certain symbols. With that in mind, this pillow is full of romance as it contains bunnies which symbolized fertility, dogs which symbolized fidelity and devotion, and flowers which symbolized the natural world.
Backed with peach velvet, and containing a zippered closure at the bottom edge along with the original hand-numbered manufacturer's sticker, this pillow was beautifully made - a faithful example of Craye's long-standing reputation for artistic design and quality.
