Vintage Eschenbach Floral Platter with Blue Stripe circa 1920s-1930s

Vintage Eschenbach Floral Platter with Blue Stripe circa 1920s-1930s

{HISTORY}

Made in Windischeschenbach, Bavaria, this pretty floral platter with its sky blue stripe and bright floral bouquets sits on the cusp of two manufacturers' milestones - a beginning and an end, making it a little bit of a mystery as to its exact age and maker.

The platter's simple backstamp of Eschenbach, Bavaria, denotes a porcelain pottery first started by Eduard Haberlander in 1913. By 1923, Eduard's pottery was well enough on its way, production-wise and reputation-wise, to begin seeking American distributors. But it was not a long-lasting transcontinental relationship that was to be had between Eduard and the U.S.Ā  In 1929, porcelain maker Oscar Schaller & Co took over Haberlander's business and saw the pottery through the tumultuous WWII era and just beyond until the pottery changed its name to Winterling in the 1950s and began manufacturing hotelware.

That means, within this brief window of pottery history, this platter could have been made by either Eduard Haberlander during the 1920s for the American export market, or it could have been made in the 1930s by Oscar Schaller & Co in the years leading up to WWII, just before the pottery was significantly affected by the war.

Either way, Eschenbach pieces from this time period are hard to find these days, so it's nice to see such a pretty platter in such good shape still traveling around the world almost 100 years later.

Featuring two popular details of 1920s and 1930s dishware - the classic blue stripe around the rim and a pink, yellow, and blue color palette, this platter easily fits in, mix and match style, with other dishware of those two decades. Here, In The Vintage Kitchen, we also especially love this platter's unique, oblong shape. Not as wide as a traditional platter, its narrow shape is ideal for tighter spaces and smaller kitchens, including under-cupboard wall display, shelf styling, and serving.Ā
