Vintage 1950s Brexton Hamper Floral Picnic Plates - Set of Four

Vintage 1950s Brexton Hamper Floral Picnic Plates - Set of Four

Imported Brexton picnic hampers combine elegance with the highest quality contents to capture the very essence of yesteryear's picnic for many years to come... (from an Australian newspaper advertisement circa 1982)

{HISTORY}

A world-wide favorite since they launched in the 1930s, the British Brexton picnic hamper was the ultimate way to dine outdoors during the 20th century. With strapped-in china, coordinated flatware, a thermos, cups, and other assorted containers all captured in suitcase style carryalls and wicker baskets, a Brexton hamper had you covered when you were heading out to the races, the game, the regatta, or simply enjoying an afternoon at your favorite local park.Ā

This set of four ceramic Brexton picnic plates was part of their 1950s series of hampers. It features a colorful daisy pattern and a unique hexagon shape and would have been accompanied by a set of smaller saucer plates to match a set of ceramic cups along with a thermos, flatware and storage bins for picnic fare.Ā

Here In The Vintage Kitchen, we have been long-time fans of swapping paper and plastic plates and napkins for real china, glassware, and cloth napkins in our picnic baskets. It just makes for a much nicer affair when you mix up cocktails in real glasses, and serve cheese and crackers and charcuterie on real wood boards and real plates. The whole point of picnicking is to relax and to enjoy your surroundings. Real dish and glassware help enhance the scene.

Colors on these vintage plates include blueberry, lavender, magenta, pale pink, black, celadon, spring green, sage and pale grey. That vibrant palette makes room for an array of complementary foods that would look just lovely served alongside these floral charmers. Blueberry pie, summer salad, deviled eggs, the whole range of charcuterie options, nuts, olives, sandwiches, fruit, all the cheeses, brownies, cake, hand pies...Ā  it's no wonder Brexton selected this pattern for their hampers. These plates go with everything. Cheers to easy entertaining!
