Vintage 1940s Royal China Honey Lee Chop Plate Platter featuring Blue and Purple Pincushion Flowers

Vintage 1940s Royal China Honey Lee Chop Plate Platter featuring Blue and Purple Pincushion Flowers

Dress your table for holiday feasts with "Honey Lee" dinnerware in a delightful floral pattern to make any meal even more inviting... (from a 1947 newspaper advertisement)

{HISTORY}

Made by Royal China in the late 1940s, the Honey LeeĀ designĀ with is delightful swirled edgeĀ and beautiful floral bouquet was both a pretty set of dishware and also a prize. Given away as free gift incentives in movie theaters, ladies who came to watch their favorite film stars on the big screenĀ in the afternoon or evening were given a piece of Honey Lee dinnerware as a free thank-you gift for attending the show. A lovely way to build a set of dishes and escape the realities of everyday life via a Hollywood production, collecting dishware in this fashion must have been such a joy.

This piece especially, given its large size and ability to hold onto everything from grilled pork chops to three-tiered cakes. Technically considered a chop plate, round platters like this one are as indispensable as oval or rectangular platters, and therefore accommodate lots of different types of food and servingĀ needs. They even make gorgeous wall art when not in use.Ā

Honey Lee came in several different patterns - wheat, tulips, and this pincushion style so it's not quite a pattern name but instead more of design name. The scalloped and swirled edge adds dynamic movement and contrasts beautifully with the pastel bouquet. Colors include periwinkle, pale blue, lavender, grey, grape, pale plum, butter yellow, emerald green, sage and pale gold.

With a name like Honey Lee, we can imagine all sorts of sweet inspirations to fill this beauty. Honey cakes, lavender cookies, glazed chicken, carmelized salads, old-fashioned doughnuts, cheese samplings, mini tarts, lemon bars.. oh the possibilities!Ā  Movie night neverĀ looked so delicious.
