Vintage 1940s Priscilla Bread Plates by Homer Laughlin for Household Institute - Set of 4 circa 1949

The name Priscilla means respectful. In particular, respectful of age, wisdom, and/or character. In other words a perfect moniker for 75-year-old dishes. 

{HISTORY}

Made in 1949 by Homer Laughlin in West Virginia for the Household Institute, this set of four bread plates features the Priscilla pattern in the Republic shape. With a scalloped edge, a gold rim, delicate embossing, and a series of pretty florals, this pattern was once part of a grocery store incentive program helping shoppers build their patterns one piece at a time over the course of the store's promotional period.

Today you might assume, that dishes that were a part of such discount programs might be cheaply made or mass-produced in a million different pieces. Not so. At least when it comes to this Homer Laughlin pattern and its Household Institute seal.

In order to be a part of the HI incentive program, dishes had to be top quality, indicative of current tastes and trends, and attractive in design in order to keep shoppers coming back for more.

Priscilla fit the bill on all fronts and became one of the Household Institute's most popular patterns. 

Sized for bread at just over 6" inches in diameter, these four easily moonlight as salad and dessert plates too. Containing a colorful array of flowers, this set looks lovely with everything from cheese and crackers to homemade pie to garden fresh fruits and vegetables.

{CONDITION}

In gorgeous vintage condition. These plates contain no chips or cracks. The floral pattern is bright, crisp, and clear on all plates. The gold detailing around each rim is bright and shiny with no worn spots or rubbing. There is one plate that looks like it has four very small spots on the front but those are actually errant pieces of coral transferware that were caught under the glaze during the manufacturing process. Two of the plates contain small rust marks on the back from where they previously hung in plate hangers Please see photos.
