Vintage 1940s Edwin Knowles Floral Teacups Navarre Pattern - Set of Four
La naturaleza es la poesia de la tierra. John Keats
{HISTORY}
Blooming in your kitchen like the most colorful garden bouquet, this set of vintage floral teacups adds instant cheer to the day and instant history to the tray. Made by Edwin Knowles in the 1940s, they feature the Navarre pattern containing roses, forget-me-nots, and strawflowers. Enhanced with a gold stripe around the rim and along the handle, these four cups look every bit the 80-year-old adventurers that they are.
Exquisitely aged, all four cups feature lovely crazing marks and some light staining in some areas which gives them unique character and instant time-worn appeal. A treasured set by a previous owner, it's fun to think about all the coffee and tea time conversations these four presided over throughout their eight decades. Were they the stars of the garden club? The get-things done go-getters of the post WWII era? Or the festive revelers of the brunch and lunch crowd? We'll never exactly know, but we can tell that these four definitely saw some fun in their day.
The word Navarre is most commonly associated with a mountainous area in the Basque region of northern Spain. If this pattern was named after that part of the world, it gives these four beauties a bit of international flair and a transcontinental pedigree. How exciting! In the words of John Keats, as shared above...
Nature is the poetry of the earth.
So pretty for spring and summer entertaining, garden parties, Mother's Day brunch, and Easter festivities, these cups are lovely for decorating both in the kitchen and on the table. That was the Edwin Knowles way.
Based in West Virginia between 1900-1963, Edwin M. Knowles made some of the prettiest dishware in the country with patterns that were colorful, feminine, and visually striking. These cups are no exception. Colors include pink, lavender, butter, tangerine, watermelon green, magenta, sage, periwinkle, and bluebell.
