Vintage 1930s Homer Laughlin Hostess Pattern Floral Platter circa 1939

Vintage 1930s Homer Laughlin Hostess Pattern Floral Platter circa 1939

{HISTORY}

Hostess! It's a word that immediately brings to mind fun times, gracious hospitality, and a bit of magical wizardry when it comes to whipping up a delightful dining experience.  The Oxford Dictionary defines a hostess as a woman who receives or entertains guests, but in this case it's a platter.

Made in July 1939 by Homer Laughlin in Newell, West Virginia, the Hostess pattern originally debuted in 1929 and came with a black stripe around the edge, an octagonal shape, and a personality that was a bit more serious. Fast forward ten years, and Hostess evolved into this curvaceous dish shape. Warm and welcoming right from the first glance. its embossed shoulder, scalloped edge, and cheerful color palette reflect all the goodtime charm a true hostess represents.

So pretty for wall art just as much as table service, this platter features a dynamic color palette of tangerine, cardinal red, celadon, spring green, lavender, pale magenta, blueberry, pale pink, and marigold. With that rainbow color palette, it's fitting for year-round use and very complimentary when paired with a wide variety of foods.

Made just two months before World War II started, we suspect this platter's cheerful character helped keep spirits lifted during the war years, when it was so important to maintain a positive attitude on the homefront and to keep meals interesting, comforting and nutritious.

Nowadays, the H.L. Hostess pattern is hard to find.  What makes this one even more special is its small size. Measuring 11.5" inches in length,  it's a great choice for petite kitchens or more intimate dining.
