San Francisco Encore by the Junior League of San Francisco - 1986 First Edition

San Francisco Encore by the Junior League of San Francisco - 1986 First Edition

Ā {HISTORY}

There's a lot to love about San Francisco between the cable cars, the low-lying fog clouds, the pastel-painted Victorian row houses, and the picturesque views of the ocean. But its food landscape is incredibly captivating all on its own. Boasting the freshest ingredients, local wines, abundant seafood, and a menagerie of cultural influence, San Francisco is a foodie town offering dynamic cuisine around every corner.Ā

In this 1986 cookbook, published by the Junior League of San Francisco, all the delectable treats of this dynamic city come together to shed a spotlight on the foods that have tantalized the appetites of travelers and localsĀ across centuries.

Covering all the corners of the city from hill to valley, mountain to bay, and back again, agricultural history opens each chapter detailing wineries and vineyards and how they complement local fare.Ā IllustrationsĀ by celebrated California artist Earl Thollander (1923-2001) are peppered throughout and a sampling of suggested menus offer inspiration in the appendix. Incidentally, suggested menus are one of the most delightful hallmarks of vintage Junior League cookbooks. Their creativity comes forth in all sorts of party idea suggestions. Our favorites here in this cookbook include menus for a Moroccan Ali Baba Night Party, a Summer Cocktail Buffet, a Year of the Dragon Party and a Summer Tennis Luncheon.Ā

Interesting recipes include Mussels in Orange-Basil Sauce, Green Fennel Soup, Fire and Ice Tomatoes, Eleven-Layer Salad, Stacked Whole Grain Hotcakes, Tomato Flans, Asparagus Souffle, Zucchini and Grits Custard, Tropical Scallops, Minted Chicken, Shredded Beef Enchiladas, Scallopini a la North Beach, Winter Pork and Squash Bake, Berry Crunchy Oatmeal Muffins, Flaky Cinnamon Twists, Norwegian Christmas Bread, SweetOnion- Mustard Bread, Fresh Lemon Tarts, Puumpkin Ice Cream Pie, Poached Pears with Lingonberry Sauce, Sesame Crunch Butter Cookies, Bittersweet Fudge Sauce and Coconut Garden Cookies.
