Original Vintage Winslow Clipper Ship Oil Painting on Canvas - 20x24 - Maritime Age of Sail Art

Original Vintage Winslow Clipper Ship Oil Painting on Canvas - 20x24 - Maritime Age of Sail Art

There is one spectacle grander than the sea, that is the sky... Victor Hugo

{HISTORY}

Adventure. Romance. Drama. Nothing captures the allure of life on the high seas quite like a well-executed clipper ship painting. With its billowing sails, choppy waters, and tilted stance, this boat is full of colorful appeal and classic nautical style.

An original painting sized at 20x24 and signed by the artist Winslow, the aged charm of this work extends well beyond its subject matter. Crackled paint in some areas, bits of canvas peaking through in others, a yellowed varnish applied to the sky and frayed edges where the canvas is stapled to its frame, all give this painting an old-world look befitting of the boat it depicts.

Most likely painted around the mid-20th century or a little before, we couldn't attribute this painting to one specific artist, although the name Winslow appears on other nautical seascapes too but with different style signatures.  Two famous Winslows of course were Winslow Homer (1836-1910) and Henry Winslow (1874-1953) - the former a nautical painter, the latter most known for his etchings, Neither seem to be the painter of this work though, so it remains a bit of a mystery as to who exactly this Winslow was here.

As for the ship itself, this might be a rendition of the Sir Lancelot - a Scottish-built trading ship that first set sail in 1865.

Colors include teal, sea green, turquoise, aqua, pale yellow, peach, nutmeg, cream, midnight blue, black and slate grey.

{SPECIAL FEATURES}

The canvas is securely stapled to the wood frame and contains no holes. The paint colors are vibrant. Please see all photos.
