Lord Hornblower - C.S. Forester Fiction circa 1946 Book Club Edition with Andrew Wyeth Cover

Lord Hornblower - C.S. Forester Fiction circa 1946 Book Club Edition with Andrew Wyeth Cover

The material came bubbling up inside like a geyser or an oil gusher. It streamed up of its own accord, down my arm and out of my fountain pen, in a torrent of six thousand words a day.  C.S. Forester

{HISTORY}

Lord Hornblower, the dashing character of a series of books by C.S. Forester (1899-1966) was part adventure story, part romance novel and part historical fiction all rolled into one. Built up in the imagination of C.S., Horatio Hornblower was not a character from real life yet based off of a series of naval officers from history. That liberation from reality gave C.S. plenty of room to play around with a dynamic muse that was considered "one of the most appealing characters of modern fiction."

Crafted over three decades, Horatio Hornblower debuted in the 1937 novel, The Happy Return and delighted readers with stories of seafaring adventures through novels and short stories published up until 1967.

A prolific author throughout his life, in addition to the popular Hornblower series, C.S. also published other notable fiction including The African Queen, which was made into a movie starring Katharine Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart, and several non-fiction books involving naval history and French military history.

With a life equally as exciting and captivating as one of his characters, C.S. was born in Egypt and educated in London before he set out to explore Europe by boat, report on the Spanish American War, cover stories about Nazi occupation in Czechoslovakia, and serve in the military in both WWI and WWII. He is known as one of the most popular and prolific writers of the 20th century.
