In colorful drawings and engaging words, children's author Helene Jordan and illustrator Joseph Low (1911-2007) show young readers how a tiny, seemingly insignificant seed can grow and transform into a mighty and majestic plant with just a little bit of care and attention. Bean seeds and eggshells are the subject of choice in demonstrating what exactly happens at each stage of a seed's growth when planted in a little bit of soil and given a few days of sun and water. 

The author of several children's books during the mid-20th century, as well as the editor of Natural History magazine, Helene had a fun way of simply explaining complex ideas to kids in straightforward and concise sentences. Aided by the whimsical drawings of celebrated American illustrator and New Yorker magazine cover artist Joseph Low, How A Seed Grows introduced pre-school-aged kids to the founding principle of all gardening efforts... seed + soil + sun + water = sprout.
