Herb Garden Design by Faith H. Swanson and Virginia B. Rady -1985 Edition Second Printing

Herb Garden Design by Faith H. Swanson and Virginia B. Rady -1985 Edition Second Printing

The plans offered here represent a wide range of possibilities - historic and private, large and small, modest and elaborate - that are easily adapted to one's own needs. (from the Introduction)

{HISTORY}

It took seven years for Ohio gardeners, Faith Swanson and Virginia Rady to write Herb Garden Design. First published in 1984, they researched and visited a vast array of different types of herb garden designs and experimented with actual layouts in their own gardens before they felt confident enough to create this extensive and knowledgeable book illustrating herb gardens for all-size plots and all levels of gardening skill.

Containing over 50 garden plans, drawn in specific detail, this book is an absolute delight for any gardener who wants to thoughtfully incorporate herbs into their landscape or build a thematic kitchen garden from which to draw year-round culinary inspiration.

Whether you are a professional chef, a master gardener, or a novice grower just starting out, there is something for everyone in this book. Illustrated garden plans are laid out in a variety of exciting themes that range from pot gardening to spot gardening to full-fledged formal gardening depending on your specific skill, style, shape and motivation. .

Examples of plans include A Salad Bowl Garden, an All Gray and Silver Garden, an Herb Collector's Garden, a Colonial Housewife Garden, a Shaker Garden, a Dye and Textile Garden, a Knot Design Garden, a Child's Herb Garden, a Biblical Herb Garden, a Scholarly Pursuit Garden, a Moonlight Garden, a Shakespearean Garden, a Williamsburg Garden, a Fragrant Garden and so many more. There are garden designs that are oval, round, square, triangular, free-form and linear. There are plans for city gardens, country gardens, community gardens and educational gardens. There are gardens that feature just a handful of different types of herbs and ones that include more than fifty.

Hailed by critics as a must-have in any garden library, this book was very well-received by hobby gardeners, professional landscape designers and horticulturalists alike, making it both a practical DIY-ers workbook and also an everlasting reference book.

We especially love it here in the Vintage Kitchen for its detailed drawings. It can be daunting to lay out a garden and figure out what can be grown next to what or which plant will look most attractive next to its neighboring companions, but here everything is planned out and labeled in the most visually appealing way.
