French Saxon Pine Cone Luncheon Plate - Rare 1950's Vintage Dishware

French Saxon Pine Cone Luncheon Plate - Rare 1950's Vintage Dishware

In a longleaf pine forest, miles of trees forever fade into a brilliant salmon sunset and reappear the next dawn as a battalion marching out of fog. Janisse Ray

{HISTORY}

Longleaf pine trees used to cover the entire American South in thick forests. Tall and stately, they have an elegant way of spacing their limbs far enough apart so that sunlight filters down their rough-skinned trunks to the forest floor, forming a canopy of filtered yet bright light thatĀ provides a barrier to the hot, humid summers. In the 1800's, the long-leaf pine was in demand by builders and clear-cutting began in the forests of Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia and the rest of the lower region, eventually destroying, over a century, much of the natural landscape. Now only 5% of longleaf pine forests survive due to continuous harvesting of what was once the most prolific type of tree in the Southern United States.

Just like the rarity of the real thing this vintage 1950's French Saxon plate featuring the longleaf pine cone pattern is equally hard to find. We like to think, here in the Vintage Kitchen, that people love this pattern so much they hang onto them for generations and keep passing them down in the family,Ā making them scarce on the open market. No one can resist a pretty tree, especially one that is no struggling to survive. This plateĀ is like a courageous little ambassadorĀ for good stewardship of the land andĀ rare beauty in the kitchen.Ā
