Farm Journal's Complete Pie Cookbook - 1965 Edition feauturing 700 Vintage Pie Recipes

Farm Journal's Complete Pie Cookbook - 1965 Edition feauturing 700 Vintage Pie Recipes

We invite you to the largest showing of American pies ever presented between the covers of one book... (from Chapter 1)

{HISTORY}

Pie! On average 186 million pies are consumed per year in the United States. Is it a wonder? No way! They are easy to make, fun to fill, and leave a plethora of options when it comes to culinary creativity. You might think that all those millions of pies sold each year would get redundant in the flavor department, but thankfully vintage pie cookbooks entertain so many forgotten recipes, home bakers will be excited to discover new (old) recipes with interesting ingredient combinations and fanciful presentations.

Here in the Farm Jornal's Complete Pie Cookbook, published in 1965, there are over 700 pie recipes spanning a century of American baking. There are heritage recipes our grandmothers and great-grandmother's brought to the U.S. from other countries, there are local homegrown family favorites our parents made, and then there are modern (1960' s era) creations that were devised using more accessible grocery ingredients and elevated techniques. Included here are also pies for all meals of the day, not just dessert.

All the standard favorites are here (apple, cherry, pumpkin, coconut, cherry, peach, etc) along with several variations of each for new (old ) twists on traditional concoctions. There is also a wide array of interesting, lesser-known pie arrangements including... Marshmellow Coconut Crust, Frosted Big Apple Pie, Red and Green Christmas Pie, Orange Angel, Sour Cream Pumpkin, Snow Cream, Cranberry Mincemeat, Herbed Onion and Cheese Pie, Salmon Pie, Potato and Egg Pie... oh the possibilities go on and on! Cobblers, tarts, hand pies, and pie companions also show up here too to add variety. Color photographs give insight into creativity on how to decorate a pie too. Think beyond the typical atop and bottom and bottom crust or latticework presentation. There are crusts with holes cut out of them, stylish ways to decorate a top crust using dough, advice on how to get your meringues to set firmly, blue-ribbon winner designs and heirloom style tips. Essentially everything you ever wanted to know about a pie, including its history, is all tucked inside this very fun cookbook.

Compiled by editor Nell B. Nichols, Farm Journal Magazine has been a leader in agriculture journalism since 1877. Focusing on all aspects of farm life from animal welfare to science and technology to the joys and challenges of the country lifestyle, this go-to publication kept families informed and updated on all the latest news. Nell would be the first to tell you that pie is one of the most prized words in the country cooking roster. Here she shows you why.
