Adventures in Food by Sunset Magazine and Helen Evans Brown circa 1964 Pre-Sale First Edition

Adventures in Food by Sunset Magazine and Helen Evans Brown circa 1964 Pre-Sale First Edition

The good cook is an adventursome cook... (from the Forward)

{HISTORY}

Sunset Magazine,  Helen Evans Brown, and Alice Harth are all icons on the West Coast cooking front, so it's no wonder the three came together to create this cookbook, Adventures in Food. Published in 1964, It contains Helen's zest for international travel and her talent for perfecting great recipes with Alice's colorful artwork and the enthusiastic editors of Sunset magazine whose goal it was to continuously present creative epicurean delights for their readership.

Adventures in Food takes home cooks on an around-the-world culinary adventure that is packed full of interesting flavor pairings guaranteeing a unique cooking and dining experience night after night.  In the 1960s, when air travel was just at the beginning stages of becoming a popular and accessible mode of transportation, international cookbooks like this one, showcased all the glamour of exotic foods made easily in the home kitchen. So whether you have been to Syria and discovered their wonderful stuffed meat pasties or you dream of visiting the city one day, the recipe for Fatiah included here will take you one step closer to experiencing Syrian culture.

Helen, an expert in West Coast cooking, also included here among these international specialties local American dishes that feature fresh ingredients found in abundance along the Pacific coastline.

Fun for art collectors as well as cooks, in addition to over 300 recipes, this book is fully illustrated in color by Alice Harth - a well-known 20th-century graphic designer who opened her own design firm in California in the 1950s at a time when few women were leading the industry. Adding colorful details to each recipe, her work adds whimsicality and artistic style to each page.

Interesting recipes include Tomatoes Whipped with Cream, Insalata di Patate e Fagiolini, Hungarian Beef Goulash, Ajoqueso, Scandinavian Fish Scallop, Nasi Goreng, Curried Peaches, Hungarian Bacon Biscuits, Mozzarella in Carroza, Chocolate Rum Mousse, Strawberries Alexandria,, Beignets Souffles and so many more!
