1940's Covered Refrigerator Dish - Cattails Pattern By Universal Pottery - Bowl with Matching Lid

1940's Covered Refrigerator Dish - Cattails Pattern By Universal Pottery - Bowl with Matching Lid

Blue-eyed grass in the meadow, And yarrow blooms on the hill, cattails that rustle and whisper, And winds that are never still... A poem by Mary Austin

{HISTORY}

During the 1940's, Universal Pottery of Cambridge, Ohio produced a vast kitchenware line called Cattails mainly for large department stores like Sears-Roebuck and Montgomery Ward. A very popular pattern, this mod design of orangey red cattails with black stems and red striped rims adorned a plethora of dishware, bakeware, cooking utensils and kitchen decor (including furniture).

Priding themselves on being an American factory run by American workers, Universal was committed to producing quality kitchenware that was as functional as it was attractive. Their main target market were home cooks who wanted to serve food directly from oven to table without sacrificing aesthetic.

This vintage Cattails covered refrigerator dish does exactly that. 75 years later and it still holds up to all the purposes it was intended for. It can be used in the oven, the fridge or on the table. It also serves as a small mixing bowl and a storage container., which makes it particularly wonderful for small kitchens who are tight on storage space.

{SPECIAL FEATURES}

- Two-piece set

- Cattail pattern

- Lovely aged patina

- Colors include ivory, black, peach, orange and red

{CONDITION}

In great vintage shape. There is light crazing on both the lid and the bowl and light staining on the bowl. There are no chips in either piece but there are a few under the glaze light hairline surface cracks on the bottom underneath the bowl where the maker's mark is. These cracks are very minor and do not bleed through to the interior of the bowl and to do not affect the structure or integrity of the bowl in any way. The maker's mark has almost been completely won away but you can see very light reference to it if you hold the bowl at an angle towards the light.

{SIZE}

Measures  4.75" inches (height including lid) x 6" inches (diameter)

{STYLE IDEA}

If you are looking for other mix and match vintage kitchenware that coordinates, Cattails looks especially attractive with this mixing bowl and this decanter.
